Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Review – Xbox Ally X Performance and Handheld Impressions

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is not a game that tries to surprise you. Instead, it leans fully into familiarity, offering a traditional JRPG experience that prioritizes comfort, structure, and consistency. What may come as a surprise, however, is just how well the game performs on handheld PC hardware, particularly on the Xbox Ally X.

This review is based on extended hands on testing of the game running natively on the Xbox Ally X, with a focus on real world performance, power efficiency, and overall playability in a portable format.

Performance on Xbox Ally X

Despite its relatively modest visual presentation, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined delivers performance well above expectations on the Xbox Ally X. Running at 1080p with most settings pushed to high, the game maintains excellent frame rates even at lower power targets.

At a 13 watt power profile, performance consistently lands between 90 and 100 frames per second in open world areas and towns. Indoor environments and dungeons frequently reach the 120 FPS cap, taking full advantage of the Xbox Ally X’s high refresh rate display. The result is a smooth, responsive experience that feels well suited to handheld play.

The game also scales cleanly. Players who prefer longer battery life can cap the frame rate at 60 FPS and reduce power draw further without sacrificing visual clarity. In this configuration, battery life can comfortably reach several hours, making Dragon Quest VII Reimagined an excellent option for extended portable sessions.

Settings and Optimization

Testing was done at 1920 by 1080 resolution with the frame rate capped at 120 FPS. The Balanced preset was used as a base, with major visual options manually set to High. Resolution scaling was left at Medium, as the visual difference between Medium and High is minimal while Medium offers more stable performance.

A 13 watt Silent profile proved to be the sweet spot for both performance and efficiency. Lower wattage profiles are usable, but performance begins to dip noticeably below this point. At higher refresh rates, the game remains stable and visually clean, reinforcing how well optimized the title is for modern hardware.

Handheld Experience

From a usability standpoint, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined feels right at home on the Xbox Ally X. Text remains readable, menus are easy to navigate, and combat pacing works well in shorter play sessions. Load times are short, transitions are smooth, and there are no noticeable stutters or hitching during normal gameplay.

This is the type of RPG that benefits from portability. Its deliberate pacing and traditional structure make it ideal for playing in smaller bursts or settling in for longer sessions without fatigue.

A Familiar Journey

As a reimagined release, Dragon Quest VII does little to redefine itself. Players familiar with the original PS1 or 3DS versions will recognize nearly everything on offer here. While there are some visual upgrades and quality of life improvements, the core design remains unchanged.

This is not a game that chases modern RPG trends or complex systems. Combat is straightforward, progression is steady, and difficulty is intentionally forgiving. While optional settings allow for added challenge, the experience is largely about relaxation rather than mastery.

That approach will appeal strongly to long time fans of the series, but newcomers may find it dated in places. The age of the underlying design is visible, and players coming from newer turn based RPGs may find the mechanics simplistic by comparison.

Final Verdict

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined delivers exactly what it promises. A faithful return to a classic JRPG, paired with surprisingly strong performance on handheld hardware. On the Xbox Ally X, the game runs smoothly, efficiently, and with enough headroom to accommodate different play styles and power preferences.

While it does not push the genre forward, it succeeds as a comfortable, dependable experience that translates exceptionally well to portable play.

Score: 7.5 out of 10

A familiar and well optimized RPG that shines on the Xbox Ally X, best suited for fans of classic Dragon Quest or players looking for a relaxed handheld friendly adventure.
