Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Tides Review – Xbox Ally X Performance

Yakuza Kiwami 3 Dark Tides continues the franchise’s long standing reputation for strong technical optimization, and its performance on the ROG Xbox Ally X highlights just how well the series adapts to handheld PC hardware.

This preview is based on a full playthrough of the demo, which runs roughly ten minutes. While brief, it offers a meaningful snapshot of real world performance across combat encounters, town exploration, and general traversal.

Performance

Running at 1080p with medium settings, Yakuza Kiwami 3 Dark Tides maintains an average close to 60 frames per second on the Xbox Ally X while operating at 17 watts. For the majority of the demo, performance remains stable, particularly during combat and indoor sections where frame pacing feels consistent and responsive.

Exploring town areas typically results in frame rates sitting in the high 50s, effectively delivering a near locked 60 FPS experience. There is one outdoor segment where performance briefly dips to around 45 FPS, but the drop is momentary. The frame rate quickly recovers and stabilizes, with only minor fluctuations above and below 60 thereafter. These variations never meaningfully impact playability.

Throughout testing, no stuttering, screen tearing, or noticeable input lag was observed. The overall experience feels smooth and polished, aligning with expectations for a Yakuza release.

Optimization and Comparison

When compared to the recently released Yakuza 0 Directors Cut, Dark Tides does not quite reach the same level of performance consistency in every scenario. That said, the difference is minimal and unlikely to be noticed outside of direct comparisons. The game remains highly playable within the constraints of handheld hardware.

Players seeking additional headroom can opt to increase wattage or lower resolution, though the default 17 watt configuration already strikes an effective balance between performance and efficiency.

Visual Settings

Testing was conducted at 1080p in fullscreen with medium graphical settings. AMD FSR 3.1.5 was set to Quality, while frame generation was disabled due to limited benefits and added latency at this performance level. All other settings were left at their default values.

This configuration delivers a clean image with consistent performance, making it a strong baseline for handheld players.

Overall Impression

Yakuza Kiwami 3 Dark Tides performs exceptionally well on the ROG Xbox Ally X. With stable frame rates, solid optimization, and smooth gameplay across a variety of scenarios, it stands out as a handheld friendly experience.

With the full release approaching, players planning to play on the Xbox Ally X can do so with confidence. While higher end systems will naturally provide additional performance headroom, the handheld experience delivers exactly what fans of the series expect.

Verdict
A well optimized Yakuza entry that translates seamlessly to handheld play on the ROG Xbox Ally X.
